The Fortress Of Sleeping Butterflies

Based on a novel of the same title, the movie tells the struggles of women in Eastern Europe under transition. Monika, a middle-aged wealthy woman, goes through a marriage crisis with her younger husband who has got a pregnant lover. A car accident leads Monika to meeting three young girls who happen to be ex-prostitutes extradited from Germany. Kristina, the youngest of all, is sent by her own family to sell her body for money; Egle is a drug addict who is blackmailed by a pornographic film director; and Gitana, who willingly chooses to become a prostitute, has a daughter who is the result of being raped by her own father. Monika's summer villa will be, as the title suggests, the fortress in which these four lost souls can awaken their inner butterfly and spread their wings to life.
